Now we approach the serious and fatal diseases because we, too often,
diagnose too late AND under certain conditions they infect
the plant quickly. This is a fungus of the Phytophthora family which has given its name to these diseases. This fungus works in two diametrically opposed ways. 1- It penetrates into the rhododendron by the aerial parts and goes back to the roots in taking the same pipes that the sap uses where it blocks the sap. Responsible, in that case, is either the Phytophora cactorum or either the Phytophthora citricola and the disease takes the name of PHYTOPHTHORA DIEBACK. On the picture we can see the left new twig is infected. A part of its canals is blocked and its leaves are thirsty because of the lack of sap.
