Their larvae are white maggots with a small tough yellow brownish head.
It is with this kind of helmet and with fine hears which cover its body
that this maggot moves in the soil. They eat only the thinner roots because their mandibles are small. That is why damage is more important to discover in containers than in the field. Their light medium in the containers helps the movements of larvae looking for new roots to eat and roots are concentrated in a low volume; whereas in the field they are more widely scattered and moreover in a medium which obstructs the movings of larvae. It is why, in the field, only young rhododendrons with small root balls can be killed by the larvae of the otiorhyncus. If we add that the cultivation in containers favours the hatching of a greater number of eggs you will know why otiorhyncus is the "villain" of nurserymen.
