The scion will be kept in this position by the use of two or three clothes pins. For the photo the clothes pins are on the same side but in fact they are opposite.
As the wood of the scion is soft the clothes pins crush (gently) the scion against the hard wood of the stock so there is no space between them. It is why the success of this method of grafting relies on the timing. After the end of July, usually, the wood is too hard.
However that depends on your area and the variety of rhododendron : for instance I can graft Mallotum on June 15th and Kilimanjaro on August 1st.

The difference of the colours is quite obvious in this picture.
